Harrow Carers

Providing information, advice and support for carers

"If I wasn’t a Young Carers’ club member, I’d be mostly at home feeling completely overwhelmed by the situation and feeling sad about my life. I do not have time to go out with my friends because I cannot leave my mum alone on weekends. [This is] the only club I can attend and have fun with other mates who understand me. We learn, share stories and feel important even if it's only for a day". – Joshi, a 15 year old carer in the Young Carers programme

Established in 1996, Harrows Carers had set out with one clear mission – to support carers in Harrow and ensure that they are provided with access to financial benefits, counselling, leisure opportunities and social welfare and housing.

This independent voluntary organisation provides programmes for carers of all ages and delivers invaluable services for those who spend a vast amount of time caring for another individual - such as relatives, the elderly and disabled persons - without getting paid.

This includes the Young Carers programme that supports young carers (aged 6 to 17 years old) who look after their parents or other family members. Harrow Carers ensure that these young carers are receiving the information and backing they need as a carer. Consequently, the burden upon young careers (and other carers alike) is reduced. The Young Carers programme also allows young carers to meet, participate in activities, do their homework together and socialise.

Looking into the future, Harrow Carers is launching new fundraising, organisational, and communications strategies. The organisation also aims to provide accommodation so that volunteers can come from all areas of the UK and have somewhere to stay. This will allow individuals to become full-time volunteers for a period of time.

Harrow Carers have been recognised for their superb work in the past. They have previously been awared an ‘Opportunities for Volunteering’ grant by Attend to help meet the demand from parent carers for respite care by recruiting and training new Volunteers.

Harrows Carers currently manages around 60 volunteers that work on its various projects. All volunteers benefit from practical training and qualifications, gaining experience, team work and developing long lasting relationships.
