Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends

Supporting Seaton & District Hospital's patients and staff with fundraising, befriending, patient outings and respite care

Through the dedication of its volunteers and donations from patients and relatives who are grateful for the care they have received at the hospital, Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends has consistently worked to support the work of Seaton Hospital. The Friends were formed before the building of the hospital and made a contribution to the building of the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Units. They have since funded the building of an Acute ward that opened in 1995. Since the group was created the Friends have held frequent fundraising activities such as the annual Summer Fete and Christmas Fayre in order to raise the funds for these improvements to the hospital.

The League also offers respite to Carers from all over the UK who are in need of a short holiday. The Doris South Carers’ Haven was donated to Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends by a very grateful benefactor. A lady had been cared for so kindly and gently by the staff at Seaton Hospital and by the District Nurses that she left them a house!

The League have made the house into a haven for Carers, to allow people who spend their lives caring for a loved one a space to have some time to themselves in the beautiful Devon landscape at minimal expense. The haven is available for Carers to use for up to a week’s retreat for a minimum donation of £150 in low season, £200 in mid-season and £250 in high season. A deposit is required from which energy costs will be deducted.

The bungalow, which sleeps four, is located in a quiet residential area of Seaton. The bungalow offers sea views, gardens, off road parking and all facilities. Seaton is centrally located along the Jurassic Coast and is an ideal location for exploring England’s only natural world heritage site and the varied attractions of East Devon and neighbouring Dorset, thereby providing a relaxing environment for carers.

The Friends also have 2 charity shops, a monthly community group (the group was formed to provide companionship for people, especially anyone who may find themselves on their own, particularly in their senior years. They have a varied and interesting program of entertainment and activities, including speakers, craft sessions, games, quizzes, bingo and music. They also have an outing once a year.  Where possible they arrange for people experiencing mobility issues to arrange coach transport from various pickup points in Colyton, Beer and Seaton), and a weekly bingo group.
