Northumbria Blood Bikes (NBB) is a charity based in the northeast of England. Their volunteers deliver blood, medical supplies, and donor milk to hospitals and other healthcare facilities outside of regular working hours, allowing hospitals to reduce their reliance on costly taxis or couriers. The volunteers use motorbikes to navigate busy traffic quickly as well as cars to ensure they can provide their services all year round regardless of the weather conditions.
When the BBC decided to do a Casualty Christmas Special around blood donation, the producers contacted Northumbria Blook Bikes to gather real-life stories from blood donors, patients, or volunteers. The story that made it onto the show is a truly special one: Terry’s journey with Northumbrian Blood Bikes began in the most personal way: as a father. His daughter, Beatrix, was in the hospital connected to a Berlin Heart while waiting for a life-saving heart transplant. But that lifeline depended on something crucial—blood, delivered by Northumbrian Blood Bikes.
Thanks to those life-saving deliveries, Beatrix got her new heart and is now thriving. Along the way, she also became Northumbrian Blood Bikes’ biggest little fan, even receiving a toy blood bike as a gift from the charity. Inspired by the kindness that helped save his daughter, Terry didn’t just say thank you—he became a blood bike rider himself.
Northumbria Blood Bikes celebrated its11th anniversary in 2025, having completed an incredible number of 120,000 deliveries of blood, medical supplies, and donor milk.
