Annette Fox Leukaemia Research Fund

Fundraising for large projects through large events

“The Annette Fox Leukaemia Research Fund is a great source of care and support to people suffering from leukaemia and other serious blood disorders in Bradford. A tireless fund-raising team is constantly active in the drive to raise money to improve the quality of life and comfort for patients… Coping with cancer or other serious conditions is difficult - the Annette Fox Fund Trustees and their supporters understand these difficulties, and do their best to make things easier,” expressed the director of the Bradford Cancer Support Centre.

Founded by the parents of a local Bradford girl who died from leukaemia, Annette Fox Leukaemia provides services and support for individuals with blood disorders.

The Fund offers a wide range of support to individuals with cancer and their families. For example, in April 2006, the Fund organised a trip to Disneyland Paris for patients and their relatives, giving families a chance to spend some much-needed quality time together. The organisation provides an aromatherapist and watercolour tutor, as well as full-time Research Nurse involved in clinical trials. It also distributes welfare grants to those in financial need.

Volunteers raise funds to support specific projects at the Cancer Support Centre based in Bradford and contribute to the improvement of comfort and care of patients with blood disorders. The Fund is managed by trustees who provide their services free of charge. This means that donation income is spent directly in patient support rather than on administration. The charity's largest fund-raising event of the year is the Smokie Gala Ball, which is now in its 29th year and attended by up to 500 people.

“The Fund plays a key role in developing and supporting our specialist unit which has been nationally acclaimed for its innovative measures in the fight against leukaemia and other blood cancers,” says the Chief Executive of Bradford Hospitals NHS Trust.

The creation of a specialised leukaemia unit at Bradford Royal Infirmary was the biggest single project undertaken to date. It raised £650,000 to convert an old fashioned Nightingale ward into a modern facility with much needed specialist equipment, training and personal support for patients. Over the years the Fund has raised in excess of £2,000,000 that was spent locally.
