Alston Cottage Hospital League of Friends

Making a stay at Alston Cottage Hospital as comfortable as possible

We couldn’t ever survive without the Friends.” – Hospital Manager

The Alston Cottage Hospital League of Friends is group comprised of volunteers from the surrounding community that work to raise funds to better the patient care at their local hospital. Raising funds enables the Friends group to buy equipment and improve facilities in the hospital and for the community nurses.

The league was founded in 1986 by groups of individuals who cared about the hospital. It was formed with a view to providing extra comforts for patients both in the hospital and in the community. The league has provided the hospital with things such as new china, commodes, and special cushions. It has also rebuilt and refurbished the Chapel of Rest at the hospital by raising more than £143,000.

The league continues to grow rapidly because of all the support, enthusiasm, and generosity of the Alston Moor community. Duly, it has been able to buy more new up-to-date equipment. The League of Friends has also been able to spend money on refurbishing the patient’s sitting room, small wards, and a bathroom (purchasing a Parker Bath to make patient stays as comfortable as possible).

Much of the money is raised through fundraising events. The main fundraising events of the year are the June Summer Fete and December's Christmas Coffee morning. They also receive a great deal of money that is raised by private events (Great North Run, Domino Leagues, etc) and from people making donations in lieu of flowers after bereavement.
